This session as part of our School Improvement Plan we are to pilot a scheme, starting with S1 and S2 to make more effective use of pupils homework diaries/year planners.
We will then extend this to include S3 and S4. The aim is to improve home/school communications and to inform parents of their child’s progress on a week by week basis.
For the vast majority of children who are working well, coming to school prepared, doing their homework, there will not be much to report but that in itself is a good thing because it will reassure parents that everything is going fine. There will be situations where a small problem has arisen and the hope is that by sharing the problem with you it can be resolved quickly.
What do we want parents to do?
We would like parents of pupils in S1 and S2 to check their child’s diary each week and to sign and date it. There is a space for this to be done on the right hand side page at the bottom. You can also write a comment or even raise an issue by writing it in the space above. However if it is an urgent matter or a sensitive matter you should write a letter to the Head Teacher.
attention of their tutor at an appropriate time.
What will the School do?
For pupils in S1 to S4 we have rearranged tutor group teachers and register teachers to be the same person, so effectively your child will see their tutor group teacher every morning and it means that tutorial time will be for 40 minutes on a Monday. Matters that are not completed during Tutorial time on a Monday can be dealt with later in the week during Registration.
Your child’s Tutor teacher will check your child’s diary once a week, so if you have written something in it then it will be seen by a member of staff and if necessary passed on or acted upon depending on what the issue is.
Tutors will be checking that your child is using their diary properly and writing down homework etc in it. The important thing is if a teacher has written something in it, such as homework not done etc then you have seen this comment and probably done something about it because its been signed by you.
What will the pupils do?
All pupils will make the best possible use of their diaries/planners by remembering to take it to every lesson, to fill it in correctly and to take it home. If their parent makes a comment then pupils must politely bring it to the attention of their tutor at an appropriate time.
